Dysport vs. Botox: Understanding the Difference

When it comes to anti-aging therapies, injectables provide a quick fix to enhance your natural beauty. The process is non-invasive and you have a number of options to choose from. When it comes to Dysport vs. Botox, both are relatively affordable procedures and can be tailored to your individual needs.

The most common cosmetic procedures are Dysport and Botox, which can be used to reverse skin wrinkles and folds, diminish the shadows around the eyes, and bring out the natural features of the face. Continue reading to learn more about the difference between the two, some background on injectables, and which procedure is best for you.

What You Should Know About Injectables

As far as cosmetic injectables are concerned, there are two distinct types. Neuromodulators shouldn’t be confused with soft tissue fillers. Fillers are used to add volume to specific areas of the face, while neuromodulators are used to reduce the movement of the muscles that cause wrinkles. The treatment interrupts the signal between the nerves and muscles, causing them to relax.

Depending on the type of injection, injectables can be categorized into three different categories. The first category is intradermal. Intradermal injections are administered into the dermis. The skin is only a few millimeters thick in comparison to the second category of injectables, subcutaneous injections, which travel beneath the fat layer beneath the skin. The third type is intramuscular, which implies that it is administered intramuscularly.

Both Dysport and Botox are administered intramuscularly and can also be administered intradermally when treating sweat disorders such as hyperhidrosis. In addition to being able to assist in sweat disorders and providing anti-aging benefits, these treatments assist in treating cervical dystonia, correcting a lazy eye, or even an overactive bladder.

Dysport vs. Botox

Although Dysport and Botox have similar chemical properties, they differ in a few minor ways. Dysport possesses a heavier molecular structure to treat larger areas of the skin. In other words, botox is the better option for mild to moderate wrinkles and lines. However, for moderate to severe wrinkles primarily located on a large surface, such as the forehead, Dysport may be recommended. Minor differences exist in the method of performing the procedure as well as in its effectiveness and long-term results. Nevertheless, both are FDA-approved and safe, so do not hesitate to try it out with the usual risks associated with undergoing any cosmetic procedure.

While Dysport and Botox both have a short recovery time and minimal pain levels, approximately three times as much Dysport is needed in order to achieve the same potency as one Botox unit. However, this does not mean that one is more powerful than the other. Rather, it means that more Dysport is required. Both procedures are comparable in cost, and depending on the specific cosmetic goal of the patient, each procedure would cost around the same amount.

In terms of effectiveness, both Dysport and Botox last approximately three to four months. The only difference is that Dysport often offers results in three days, while Botox usually takes a week or more to yield results. Generally, both options produce optimal results within two weeks.
